EDGING DISTRACTION

Performance at my studio, march 6th 2026.
with invited artists : Surya Tüchler, Carlotta Oppermann and Janina Warnk

Don’t you have this part of your attention,
running as a background task,

searching for anything that could deflect you
from what you have to do?

Just in case there was another lead to the story you are living ?

As a performer, distraction can happen all the time. Could be caused by one’s whisper or laugh,
by technical problems, or actually,
any circumstances.

As a viewer, you can easily slide into distraction,
by wanting to archive the moment on your phone;
by overthinking what you see, or
by noticing any friendly knowing glance
looking for connection ◕‿◕

Focus is when you consider «the distraction» as part of «the action» itself.

So there is no judgement on what you put your attention onto.

So then Edging refers to this practice of keeping that state of mind alive — this thin edge
where you are paying attention to «the subject»,
while noticing what’s going on around it,

and follow where your focus wanders,

and hold on to this traction.

about EDGING

The reference is there, and I chose the title knowing this. Edging refers to this sexual pratice of keeping yourself — or your partner — on the edge of coming, and stop whatever you do before orgasm occurs, keeping you «on the edge» of pleasure.

Now this "edging" word - out of the sexual context - also talks about reaching edges, limits, lines.

Combined with distraction : it refers also to 2 things :

« Distraction » like « disturbance state »
Like I was busy on something and got disturbed

you stop doing what you were originally doing to put your attention on something else,

then

Edging Distraction

would be a reverse form of saying
keep doing what you do, don’t get distracted, stay on this edge where focus is optimal,
focus on what you are doing!

but also "Distraction" like some kind of entertainment,
we can't escape it, this thin line that exist between "performance" and "theatre" :
a little too much and you «fall» into spectacle.
